Wisconsin Turkeys Intentionally Poisoned
Posted by Brian Lovett

Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are investigating the intentional poisoning of about 200 wild turkeys in a wooded area near a farm in Oconto County, in the northeastern portion of the state.

Wardens found the dead turkeys after responding to a citizen tip to the agency’s hotline.

“The responsible party has been identified and will be referred to the district attorney for charges once the investigation has been completed,” said Regional Warden Byron Goetsch.

The suspect could face civil and criminal charges. Also, the court could assess statutory wildlife restitution surcharges of $175 per turkey.

DNR officials said they believe the public, pets and the environment are not at further risk of exposure to the poisoned bait that was used. The substance is being confirmed by lab tests.

“Once the substance is confirmed, we will make further evaluation and take appropriate steps,” Goetsch said.

Preliminary indications are that numerous other surviving turkeys in the area were not exposed. The DNR has taken steps to protect the birds against further exposure. Aerial surveillance did not find other affected wildlife.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the 24-hour DNR hotline at (800) 847-9367.

The responsible party should be punished to the fullest by applying any and all laws that were broken. The wild turkey was nearly wiped out from over hunting. To have some idiot do something such as this is inexcusable. It's not as if they were trying to kill his family.
Here in Louisiana I can only dream of a place that has 200 turkeys on it!

i guess idiot is the right word. 200 turkeys don't just show up over night and to do something that stupid this close to turkey season... he could have let people hunt his property, he could have even charged people to hunt his property... what an idiot. i think $175 a turkey is getting off pretty cheap.

I agree with Mr. Parker if it was his property and he wanted the turkeys eliminated just let people hunt on the land and even charge them if he wanted to. Some people are just too selfish and ignorant I suppose. I think the person who commited the crime should've been the one who got poisoned. There's no excuse for that kind of disreguard for life. If his/her father took him/her hunting when they were a child that respect for life would've been instilled in that person. What a shame.

I just finished commenting on the other moron who poisoned over 100 turkeys, and I really can't believe the stupidity in people doing this to animals. Obviously this person has no respect for life or the joy and respect for wildlife. I have taken my children hunting since they were little and have taught them the endless joys of the outdoors and a successful harvest that fills our freezer and supplies us with the food for our table. And that you eat what you shoot / kill. Maybe this moron should be made to eat everything that he killed despite what toxins he used to kill them, and still have to endure a substantial fine ( a lot more than 175.00 per bird) and jail time too. Idiots like this make me sick
